At 25 km to the north
west of Hama, the Shayzar fortress stands on a high hill. The tower of
its impregnable entrance rises up as a testimony of the glorious past of
this Arabian tower which resisted the successive attempts to control it
due to its distinguished architecture, which demonstrates the Arab and
Islamic architectural achievements.
The Shayzar fortress was mentioned in several historical texts (
Egyptian, Greek and Roman), and by arab and occidental travelers. It had
several names such as:
Sizarar,
Larissa.
The fortress was subject to huge destructions because of seisms and
invasions. |

Many Lords have restored it (Noureddine Al-Zinki, Saladin,
Al-Zaher Bibress, Sultan Kalaoun), but the decay of time and seism has affected it and has destroyed
most of it.
Within an urgent
program to rescue the fortress in an endeavour to display the features
of our civilization to humanity and to future generations, the
Osmane Mounif AIDI Foundation for Culture, Communication and Development has contributed with an Italian
archaeological specialized mission from Universita CaFossari di
Venezia-Dipartimento di Studi Eurasiatici to the restoration and
rehabilitation of the fortress in several stages, within a program that
will extend on many years.
