Symposium on Irrigation Modernization
Constraints and Solutions

Damascus, Syria, 28-31 March 2006

The International Programme for Technology and Research in Irrigation and Drainage (IPTRID), together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform in Syria (MAAR); the Network of Syrian Scientists, Technologists and Innovators Abroad (NOSSTIA), the University of Damascus, The Supreme Council of Science in Syria, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA);

   
the Mediterranean Action Plan of the United Nations Environment Programme (MAP-UNEP); and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ); have organized a Symposium on Irrigation Modernization Constraints and Solutions which was held in the period from 28 to 31 March 2006, sponsored by the Foundation Osmane Mounif AIDI for Culture, Communication and Development, with the objectives to :

search for solutions, achievements, and experiences realized at the international levels to achieve sustainable plans and effective measures for irrigation modernization; review methods and accumulated experiences in Syria and within a broader regional scope of the Middle East in the field of irrigation modernization, prioritize issues and challenges for achieving sustainable water development; and provide opportunities for exchange and sharing of experiences and best practices amongst participants in the area of research and development and possible joint ventures.

Dr. Osmane AIDI who chaired the final session has exposed his experience in a 1000 hectares modern irrigation pilot project (the 7th of April project) in Syria in 1984 using 8 types of modern irrigation systems.
